Early 19th C Grand Provencal Pitcher Pichet Provencal Vert TOP Item #P2v Origine: Provence, France Circa: 1820 - 1850 Details: The Pichet de Provence is the rarest pitcher form to be found in this region as it was only made in a sliver of the area between Salernes in the Var and Aubagne near Marseilles. The pichet was used daily for drinking cider and would sometimes be put to use as a wine pitcher, en plus! The pinched bec with the large circular rim coated in a cream glaze was considered a feat of creativity when the Potieres of the mid-19thC were continually coming up with new creations to keep 'au courrant'. This popular form was a keeper in Provence! They ranged from 7 to 15 inches and were glazed in a stunning brick-red glaze as well as some rare glazes in green and pale yellow. J&V has retrieved some more of these pichets from a collector who lives near Salernes and they are exemplary. This one here that we present is from a lot with the rare distinction of having the early-19thC form which had a longer slimmer center and a very pinched spout that is more pronounced than other pichets of the early-mid 19thC. Amazing example of this form at the Grand size of 12 inches. TOP condition and one of the most beautiful that J&V has ever found with a 'beyond emerald' green. It has the perfect combination of a wonderful authentic air of use and time and terrfic condition! Not found very often in the U.S. nor Provence....their numbers are sadly fading at known antique centers..as collectors keep them locked up in their armoires.
