Biot Jar of the 16thC Jarre de Biot, 16es Item #RF24B Two Parts : Detail in #RF24A Origine: Biot,Provence, France Circa: End of 16thC Fin de 16es Detail: A Jarre de Biot that belongs in the Louvre. Dating from the 16thC, this giant Oil jar made in the famous hill-town of Biot which overlooks Nice and the sea, has the stamps of the 'Croix de Malta" (Cross of Malta), a stamp mark dating from the 16thC when these giant vessels were used to transport Olive Oil for trade throughout the Mediterranean basin. The jar itself, is photographed in the book 'Jarres de Biot'. It stands at 4.5 feet and almost as wide. It is magnificent and most definitely the only Biot Jar of this age and this other form of this ancient time in the United States.
